My Story

Ever since my first welding course in high school in 1988, I’ve had a fascination with crafting things out of steel. I was able to pursue my interest in metalwork through some courses with the Canadian forces in 1994. I continued learning in college, when I learned more about working with steel and an auto body repair and refinishing course.

Over the years, my activity declined due to my career in communications with the military, but I always had some small project going on in my home garage.

It was during the pandemic that I sourced my first forge and anvil and decided I wanted to craft two unique knives for my younger twin brother’s 50th birthday. It was this project that made me realize the benefits smithing had on my PTSD condition. It was at this point that I realized I really wanted to help others who were like myself.

As I delved deeper into the world of bladesmithing, I found comfort and purpose in the act of creating with my hands. The process of heating, shaping, and hammering metal became not just a hobby, but a therapeutic outlet for me. It provided a sense of accomplishment and calmness that I hadn’t experienced before.

With this newfound passion, I began to explore ways to share my skills and knowledge with others who may benefit from it. From this Got your 6 was born.

Overall, my journey from welding in high school to becoming a bladesmith and advocate for mental health has been transformative. It has not only allowed me to pursue my passion for metalwork but has also given me a meaningful way to try and make a difference in the lives of others.
